Casting vision is one of the greatest responsibilities of a leader. But what you do after the vision-casting is even more important. Most leaders move forward with one of two extremes. Some focus on empowerment, giving everyone the freedom to pursue the vision in their own unique ways. Others focus on alignment, ensuring that everyone is moving forward together in the same focused direction.

Empowerment-heavy leaders cast vision then leave everyone alone to do as they see fit.  A year later, they look back and wonder how everyone ended up on different pages.

Alignment-heavy leaders cast vision then micro-manage everyone to ensure that no one veers off course.  A year later, they look back and wonder why their team is dissatisfied.
